This paper addresses the problem of designing an active decentralized stablizing controller for a class of cable-stayed bridge structures subject to parametrical uncertainties and seismic excitation. The dynamic behaviour of the bridge is described by a mathematical model which takes into account the inherent nonlinearities due to the stay cables geometry. Control design is made based on the principle of sliding mode to reduce the magnitude of the transversal vibrations of the bridge deck induced by a seismic excitation. A numerical simulation example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.
