This review article consists of three parts: (1) an updated review of the vibration-based damage detection methods, followed by a discussion on the applicability and limitation of these methods to civil engineering structures; (2) a summary of the research efforts in this field in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), with focus on the development of modal sensitivity based and neural network based damage identification methods; (3) a survey of on-line monitoring systems already installed on cable-supported bridges and an overview of a neural network based hierarchical identification strategy proposed for the three cable-supported bridges in Hong Kong.
