Comparison of Test Data and Numerical Simulation for a Submerged Stiffened Cylinder Subjected to an Underwater Explosion
This paper describes the results of a verification and validation study for the response of a submerged cylindrical shell to an underwater explosion. The Japan Defense Agency fabricated and tested the structure. The structure consisted of an externally stiffened cylindrical shell with flat end closures containing internal structure. The submerged structure was subjected to fifteen UNDEX events consisting of an initial shock wave and multiple pulses from an oscillating and migrating bubble. This paper presents the comparison of the test results for the final test which produced severe deformations, with a numerical simulation by an explicit nonlinear dynamic finite element procedure coupled to a doubly asymptotic approximation for the fluid-structure interaction.
