The actual state of characterizing the biodegradability of plastics in an aqueous medium under anaerobic conditions is discussed showing results obtained from PHB/PCL copolymers with different PHB contents, cellulose acetate and ,,bionolle". Basis for evaluating biodegradability is setting up a C - balance. In addition, the determination of the molecular weight distribution during and after the degradation process is performed by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The polymers are characterized with SEC during the degradation process. The identification of monomers after the degradation process is carried out by mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS).
