A new theoretical equation that exactly describes the thermal conductivity of two phase materials over the wide range of the contents is proposed. This new equation has been obtained by introducing a new parameter named P_(d max) into Cheng and Vachon's equation. This parameter permits the new equation to predict the thermal conductivity of composite materials no matter what shapes the fillers have and no matter how the fillers are dispersed in the composites. Furthermore, this new equation would make it possible for the measurement of the thermal conductivity of composite materials to determine the dispersion state of the filler in the composite materials. The new equation would be applied to semicrystalline polymers, which are two phase materials consisting of crystalline and amorphous phases. The application of this new equation to many kinds of materials will be discussed.
