Improved stability and targetability of liposomes via coating with hydrophobized polysaccharides has been reported. On this basis it is relevant to test these liposomes in vivo. Liposomes coated with polymers in this manner may promote absorption of encapsulated peptide/protein drugs by protecting them against degradation in the GI tract, reducing leakage, and possibly enhancing liposome retention in the small intestine as a result of interaction of the polymer with the GI absorptive surface. This report describes outcomes of orally-administered cholesteryl-manan-coated liposomes to rats in comparison to uncoated liposomes.
