Start-up and Operational Performance of the HADEED HSM Complex, Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia

In June 1996, HADEED (Saudi Iron and Steel Company) awarded VAI a contract for the turnkey supply of an integrated flat-steel production facility with a design capacity of 800,000 t/a of hot-rolled coils and sheets. The contract featured the complete design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, start-up and commissioning of all process equipment. The project is the fourth-largest order ever implemented by VAI in the company's history. The successful commissioning of the complete hot-rolling complex commenced in spring 1999, and by the end of 2000 the performance tests had been successfully conducted and the final acceptance certificate issued. Details of the performance test results are discussed below. Future expansion includes finishing mill stand No. 6 and a new skin pass mill is scheduled for completion in 2002.
