Cooling capacities of Poly(Alkylene Glycol)-PAG-, oil and water quenchants have been analyzed with the objective of determining the appropriate conditions for quenching large dies made of alloy and high alloy steels. It is shown that for this purpose, aqueous PAG solutions of high concentrations (20 - 35%) can be used successfully. It is also shown that the working side of the dies should be quenched very rapidly by utilizing high agitation (spray or flow) of PAG solutions. This process technology significantly increases the durability of the dies and allows for the replacement of quench oils with aqueous PAG quenchants.
