The use of conventional X-ray sources to collect powder diffraction data for crystal structure determination is discussed. Two diffraction optics, Bragg-Brentano and Debye-Scherrer, with monochromatic X-rays are used for data collection. The successive stages involved in an ab initio structure determination are described and the examples studied in the Rennes Group are listed. A few examples are discussed and, finally, the impact of this modern development of the powder method is illustrated by the study of members of chemical families and materials obtained in the course of the decomposition of solids with low thermal stability.
