The initiation and propagation of cracks at sharp notches and the influence of overloads are investigated experimentally and with FEM analysis. The inadequacies of the ΔK_(eff)-concept with the usually defined value K_(op) are shown. It is suggested to estimate the fracture parameter from the local cyclic straining ahead of the crack tip.
