Goat bone narrow cells were isolated from the iliac crest of adult Dutch milk goats and grown under culture conditions facilitating osteogenic differentiation. The culture medium comprised of alpha -MEM supplemented with 15percent foetal bovine serum and with or without dexamethasone, L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate and beta -glycerophosphate. The in vitro osteogenic potential of the cells was examined by the production of a bone-like mineralised extracellular matrix. After seeding and culturing the cells for 1 week in porous calcium phosphate particles followed by subcutaneous implantation in nude mice for 4 weeks, the in vivo osteogenicity of these hybrid samples was examined by determining de novo bone formation.
