In this study we traced and quantified the silicon released from bioactive glass granules (BGG) in vivo (45S5, 300-355 mu m). 1500 mg of BGG were implanted in the paraspinal muscle of 4 kg rabbits. Blood and urine samples were obtained weekly. After 6 weeks, the rabbits were euthanized and the following tissues and organs were harvested: local muscle, appendix, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lung, and thymus. Using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the concentration of elemental silicon (Si) was measured in these fluid, tissues, and organs.
