In order to analyze the filling stage in the die-casting process,the VOF(Volume of Fluid) mehtd is adopted in the finite element anlsysis.An adaptive grid is incorporated to capture a higher resolution of the free surface configuration.The adaptive grid is created through the refinement and coarsenting procedures.The techniques based on the VOF method are also devleped to increase the accuracy of the analysis.Those included the filling pattern,the advection treatemtn and the free surface smoothing tehcniques.To verify the efficiency of the prposed techniques and the adaptive grid rigorously,the radial flow with a point source and the collapse of a dam have been analyzed.As the analysis of a practical 3-D problem,the filling stage of a cover of the transmission case has bene simulated and hte efficiency of the adaptive grid has been verified.
