A great opportunity for the whole world to capitalize on remarkable technological advancements has turned up. The Global Information Infrastructure (GII) program offers the possibility to apply them over a broad range of applications benefiting our society. One of the many examples is distance learning, the conducting of education and training at a long distance by using modern telecommunication technology. Recently, the utilization of different kinds of images (and videos) for long distance education and training become increasingly important and popular. To speed up the transmission of huge image data and to reduce the cost in distance learning applications, fast query and retrieval techniques for images are required. Content-based Image Retrieval (CIR) can help to accelerate the searching of images, to increase the efficiency of transmission and to decrease the service price. This paper will discuss the principles, techniques and advantages of CIR, some experiments and results, as well as the potential of CIR in distance learning applications.
