The "Understanding Chinese Culture and Learning Mandarin Chinese On-Line" project was created as part of the requirements for the classes "Computer Uses in Education" and "Analysis on Advanced Instructional Technology", under the instruction of Professor James Levin. Inspired by my experiences of tutoring Mandarin Chinese to American students and of four years of surfing on the Internet, I wanted to use the Net for teaching. Professor Levin's courses provide me with the professional training in CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) and a chance to make my idea come true. The whole project has been a year-long project. In the first semester, the focus of the project was to build up a frame and to provide an information database for students and/or teachers to access. In the second half of the year, an original Daily Conversation Tutorial is added, and a section introducing Chinese Festivals will be done by May of 1998.
