The mineral industries have always hadsignificant environmental problems. Dealing with them is inmany cases technically possible but the cost is often prohibitivein an industry with uniform products and much trade. Action tomake mineral products less uniform and more distinguishable interms of the environmental impacts involved in producing aspecific shipment or volume of mineral is suggested as apossible solution, if combined with means to identify eachshipment. This requires identification thechniques and inparticular clear and unequivocal evidence about environmentalimpacts at all stages of production.
