We propose a Waveguide-width-abruptly-EXpanded spot-size-converter(WEX-SSC) structure for reducting the thrshold current of SSC-LDs. measured absorption loss of the WEX-SSC-LD was half that of an SSC-LD with a constant waveguide width. The WEX-SSC laser diodes exhibited excellent lasing characteristics up to 85 deg C, and low coupling loss was maintained.
