This discussion includes an explanation of aspects of osmotic pressures in clay type soils. Even within clay soils, use may be made of the fundamental stress equation(1) which was given on page 137 of Volume 1 of the conference. This explanation of osmotic pressures in clay soils(shown in Figure 2 of this discussion) is also relevant to the excellent key-note lecture by Prof. E.E>Alonso on "Modelling expansive soil behaviour". Prof Alonso used the Gibbs Free Energy Concept to describe osmotic pressure behaviour in clay mineral structures. The present discussion uses an alternative piezometic pressure concept to show some similar phenomena.
