摘要

The use of unsaturated soil mechanics in practice is associated with the capability of defining the stress state of the soil and its seasonal variation. The main aspect involved with the use non usual procedure for design and analysis of geotechnical works is the failure. The question is always: How does the failure occurs? The application of the unsaturated soil mechnaics principles face the uncertainty of the main factor that controls its practical use, which is the soil suction. This report presents some aspects of the unsaturated soil mechanicsl that are currently in use and found in the literature. It intends ot describe the aspects that should be considered when dealing with unsaturated soil. Case histories are used as an attempt to link the potential use of the unsatureated soil mechanics to the practice.
