The total quality ethic in British Steel has increased the awareness of the potential of teamworking in order to solve problems. This approach has led to the formation of Total Quality Performance (TQP) teams with specific objectives and targets to solve a range of short term problems in individual works activity areas. Teams comprising experts from all parts of the company have also been formed to contribute to current and longer term development work to improve refractories operations and quality. Savings in both refractories costs and consumptions have been achieved and these can be split into two approaches.
