A new type of tundish heater, N2 Jet Heater, has been developed by the authors so as to keep the inside of vessel hot and inert in the cyclic use operation of hot tundish. The system, an application of storage type heat exchanger, provides the jet stream of nitrogen gas heated up to 1500 deg C (2732deg F) into the tundish in order to maintain the non-oxidizing atmosphere. The new heating system was introduced in No.4 Slab Caster, Kawasaki Steel's Mizushima Works, resulting in the notable effects on the quality improvement of cast slabs in the cyclic use operation of hot tundish. This report presents the outline of N2 Jet Heater and its effects on the steel qualities.
