Investigations on community response to transportation noises have been going on for years and the issue is still under discussion at international levels. Although field surveys are more emphasized, simulated-environment studies also exist onannoyance for three kinds of noise sources, namely, road traffic, aircraft and railway traffic. Although simulation of annoyance in laboratory has been criticized in previous literature, it is accepted to be beneficial in dealing with the effect ofdifferent parameters on responses [1,2]. On the other hand, comparison of the reactions against different sources has revealed the dominance of either traffic noise or aircraft noise through field and laboratory studies [3,4] and the conflict between thejudgments on this issue necessitates further investigations applying similar methodology and standardized techniques which are oriented towards the same objective.In this paper, the results obtained from the previous field and laboratory studies-under the supervision of the first author with different teams, have been re-analysed and evaluated along with the significance analysis on the 'source-type effect'. Thefield survey was conducted at sample residential areas in Istanbul and the experimental data were acquired from the laboratory study conducted in Japan. In these studies, annoyance from three types of noise sources were scrutinized, first at a generallevel, then with respect to activity disturbance, by implementing the similarly structured questionnaire forms. The primary objectives of both studies were to determine the noise-dose and response relationships and, to search for more evidence about theeffects of source type, which were also targeted in the lab.study. Field data later have been integrated for the same purpose.
