The diagnostic approach to hyperadrenocorticism(Cushing's syndrome) is a stepwise process. First, and most importantly, a suspicion of hyperadrenocorticism arises from supportive historical, physical, and routine laboratory findings. Next, one or more screening tests are performed to either confirm the suspected diagnosis or to rule it out. Once a diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism is made, a discriminatory test is performed to either confirm the suspected diagnosis or to rule it out.
