Pain n horses with colic may be managed with pharmacologic agents having various modes and duration of action, potencies and side effects. The veterinarian must consider the degree of analgesia necessary in light of the possible side effects and subsequently decide which analgesic should be used and the appropriate dose. These decisions require experience, attention to information in the scientific literature, and open lines of communication with other veterinarians. The most commonly used drugs arethe nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, sedatives and opioid analgesics.
