Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction in the horse Part I: clinical signs and pathophysiology

In aged horses, dysfunction of the pituitary adrenal axis is nearly always associated with hypertrophy,adenomatous hyperplasia, or in the most advanced cases,functional adenoma of the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland. Although this condition was first described in 1932,the exact pathogenesis, diagnostic testing plan and appropriate treatment are still being discussed.This presentation will provide up-to-date information on the disease, the understanding of its pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. We hope to provide a forum for discussion and stimulus for collaborative research in this area.
