The launching of the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) programme has necessitated extensive research and development work in view of the large scale up (33 times higher power) from the experimental reactor FBTR which was built in collaboration with CEA, France, requiring minimal engineering development at that time. The need for considerable thrust in engineering systems and component development was evident along with research in fuel cycle areas in order to optimise/ standardise the capital intensive prototype reactor design. There was also the need to validate computational codes and analysis methods by experiment support. After giving our approach to Project R & D, this paper summarises the important engineering development activities being pursued or planned for the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor.
