A low cost sensor system for mobile robots that uses a single ultrasonic sensor rotated by a DC motor is presented. The system has multiple capabilities which includes object monitoring, target following, obstacle detection, etc. The applications of following mobile objects (a person, another robot, etc.), recording paths and supervising the tracking of these paths are considered. The integration of the perception system in autonomous vehicles is also studied. In particular, the implementation in RAM-2 is discussed. The mobile robot is capable of following mobile targets in open areas at a top speed of 0.35 m/s.
