Competitive cross-relaxation and energy transfer in Cs2aSmxEuvGd1-x-vCl6

Luminescence decay curves from the $_5$/D$-1$/ state of Eu$+3$PLU$/ in the cubic hexachloroelpasolite crystals Cs$- 2$/NaSm$-x$/Eu$-0.1$/Gd$-0.9$MIN@x$/Cl$-6$/ have been measured at 80 K and 300 K. At this concentration of Eu$+3$PLU$/, cross-relaxation to nearby Eu$+3$PLU$/ acceptor ions and energy-transfer to the $+4$/G$-5/2$/ state of Sm$+3$PLU$/ occur at both temperatures. Excellent agreement between the experimental decay curves and the a priori calculated curves is achieved by using a recently developed discrete shell model for energy transfer.
