Growth and optical properties of Er$+3$PLU$/ doped single crystals 5NaF 9YF$-3$/ are investigated. The low temperature absorption and emission spectra were sufficiently resolved to allow building up the Stark sublevels diagram. The measured absorption line strengths at room temperature were used for a Judd-Ofelt analysis. The resulting radiation rates are tabulated and compared with the experimental lifetimes. The possibility to use such material for both IR and visible laser emissions is discussed.
