The production steps of continuous fibre reinforced aluminium or magnesium and their alloys are described in general: preform manufacturing, liquid metal infiltration by gas pressure, solidification and finishing. The different versions ofinfiltration techniques are quoted. The elastic properties and the tensile strength of different fibre (carbon or ceramic multifilament tows) - light metal matrix systems are compared in longitudinal and if available in transverse direction to the fibres. The parameters and mechanisms governing the anisotropic properties are discussed and correlated to the material selection and to the processing steps. Conclusions are drawn for farther improvement and the application of multidirectional fibre orientations.
