Decommissioning situation and research development for the decommissioning of the commercial nuclear power station in Japan

There are 48 commercial nuclear power station in operation in Japan as of January 1, 1995, which supplied about 28% (2.2×10{sup}8 MWh) of total annual electricity generation in FY 1992. Accordingly as the nuclear power contributes so much in electricity generation, there is a growing concern in the public toward the safety on decommissioning nuclear power station. It is gravely important to secure the safety throughout the decommissioning.
