ABB has pioneered the use of statistical methods to combine DNBR uncertainties with Statistical Combination of Uncertainties methods developed by Combustion Engineering for CE reactors. These methods have been extended to Westinghouse-type PWRs and updated to take advantage of advances in computer technology. This new approach is a Monte Carlo Application of Statistical Combination of uncertainties (MASC). Application of the MASC methods results in an increase of at least 3% overpower margin for a typical PWR core.
