Bearing fault vibrations signals are amplitude and frequency modulated. The quality of the demodulation achieved determines the efficiency of the vibration spectrum analysis in detection the fault. A parameter free demodulation method based on Teager Kaiser Energy operator (TKEO) proposed by Liang and Bozchalooi, Mechanical Systems and Signal processing, 2010 was shown to be very efficient in bearing fault diagnosis. In this paper, it is shown that TKEO underperforms in case of vibration signals with very low signal to noise ratio (SNR). A simple method which overcomes the aforementioned problem is also presented. It is based on the application of Generalized Teager Kaiser Operator (GTKEO) and it is demonstrated using experimentally generated bearing fault data obtained in presence of gear box along with an additive noise. The efficiency of the proposed approach to detect fault in presence of very low SNR is shown in comparison with TKEO.
