A computerized axial fan design/performance analysis system (FANDAS) coupled with CFD software (CFX) is developed and applied for high efficiency and low noise fan development. Based on fan design requirements, the FANDAS conducts 3-D blade geometry design, quasi-3D flow/performance analyses by through-flow modeling and noise evaluation by the models for discrete frequency and broadband noise sources. Through the design sensitivity analyses of fan design variables using the FANDAS, an optimal fan design is achieved for high efficiency and low noise level. The FADAS design results are verified by the CFX code, a CFD program for turbomachinery analysis, and are favorably compared with the flow analysis results along the blade span of designed fan. With the optimized 3-D fan design geometry, actual fan is manufactured and tested in the duct-type or chamber-type test facilities. The FANDAS predictions on the performance and the noise level of designed fan are well agreed with actual test results. The predicted fan noise spectrum is also favorably compared with the measurement results showing discrete and broadband noise components. The fan design optimization gives 10% efficiency improvement and 11 dB noise reduction compared with the conventional market product.
