The effect of varying the sulfitity of the cooking liquor in wheat straw AS-AQ pulping was studied. Experimental results revealed that delignification rate increased with decreasing sulfitity, other cooking conditions were being kept constant. However delignification rate decreased slowly when sulfitity was less than 0. 3.On the other hand, the selectivity of delignification was less significant at lower sulfitity velues. Consequently the dissolution rate of carbohydrates was increased, resulting in lower pulp yields. The sulfitity of 0. 3 seemingly brought about the highest reaction activity for lignin removal in cooking wheat straw with AS-AQ.
