This paper presents the results of an experimental testing program in which four large-scale prestressed concrete beams are strengthened by non-prestressed and prestressed fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets. One of the beams serves as a control specimen, another is strengthened with non-prestressed carbon fibre sheets, and the remaining two are strengthened with prestressed carbon fibre sheets. A method of prestressing the carbon fibre sheets during the application process is outlined and the subsequent behaviour of the specimens under static loading is presented. Comparisons are made between the control beam, the beam reinforced with non-prestressed carbon fibre sheets, and the beams strengthened with prestressed sheets. Serviceability and ultimate conditions are considered and a theoretical prediction of beam behaviour is presented.
