As known, the easily available squaric acid 1 can condense with N,N-disubstituted aromatic or heteroaromatic compounds to give deeply coloured compounds, called squaraines. E.g., N,N-disubstituted anilines and N,N-disubstitutcd thiophenes yield 1,3-bis-4-aminophenyl-substituted squaraines 2 and 1,3-bis-2-aminothienyl-substituled sqaraines 3, respectively. The squaraines 2 and 3 exhibit intense absorption bands at 600 - 700 nm in solution and about 550 - 900 nm in dispersed or solid form. In respect to several other molecular properties, such as high aggregation tendency, the squaraines 2 can be used as spectral sensitizer for laser diode driven photoactive materials, such as data recording or storaging materials, or as photoactive pigments in xerographic devices.
