STRUCTURAL REPAIR OF A BURNED COMPOSITE SKIN

The paper discusses the investigation, design and repair of a composite structure that was inadvertently burned in an industrial accident. It was found that large composite primary structures can be repaired and a scale-up effect from smaller to larger repairs was not observed. Load redistribution within the repair area and/or the adjacent substructure was a major design consideration in this repair. Composite materials used in the repair gave additional flexibility in design and minimized load redistribution due to the repair.
