The area control error (ACE) is an indication of the mismatch between generation and load demand of a power system. This signal is an integral part of the automatic generation control (AGC) system which seeks to match area generation and load on a moment to moment basis. High frequency load variations and noise in the ACE signal can cause unnecessary and unwanted control action to occur. This paper demonstrates the use of the EASY5 engineering analysis system in modeling a power system and its AGC cycle. The model is subjected to a ramp load change with nonfiltering to establish a baseline control effort. Then, a random high frequency component is added in combination with various filters to explore the effectiveness of the filters. The resulting responses are compared to illustrate the need for appropriate filtering techniques.
