Ride is an important factor to be considered in the selection of new buses and equipment for an urban bus fleet. Ride is important not only as a comfort factor for the passengers, but also as an occupational health and safety issue for the drivers. A good ride assists the driver in carrying out the task with ease and safety. In the long term, a bad ride can lead to health problems such as chronic lower back pain. This paper reports the development of suitable testing procedures for evaluating the ride of new buses and associated drivers' seats for the city of Canberra. Factors considered in developing the tests are discussed as well as measuring equipment and procedures. Tests were evaluated both according to the ISO and British Standards for the evaluation of human vibration. Differences and similarities between the standards are discussed.
