In machining process, tool's critical wear and breakage can not only cause damage of workpieces, but also do great harm to machine tools and other equipments of manufacturing system. Recently tremendous efforts have been made for monitoring andforecasting of tool wear and breakage. A new monitoring method, photoelectric method of laser beam, has been presented in this paper. This method uses intensity distribution of laser beam which submits Gauss distribution from the very central point to the edge. During the experiments, let the laser beam penetrate a very tiny hole on a plate linked to the tool post. The light intensity going through the hole varies as the tool post vibrates. Electric signals received by the photosensitivecomponent on the other side of the plate change, too.
