Application of the casthouse expert system at Mizushima No.3 Blast Furnace has optimized control of the taphole depth, mud injection amount, and mud calcination time, with the following positive effect: (1) Tapping frequency has decreased (the tapping time per tap has been extended), the burden on casthouse personnel has been reduced. (2) Both the number of drills and pricker bars used and the unit consumption of mud have decreased, reducing the cost of pig iron production. (3) The frequency of blast volume reductions required to compensate for deterioration in pig/slag conditions has decreased, improving the stability of blast furnace operation. As these points suggest, the introduction of this type of expert system for the casthouse has made a significant contribution to improved blast furnace operation. The authors therefore intend to make use of these results to further improve the level of expert system performance and increase the number of guidance items.
