PATTERNS OF SELF CITATION ACROSS FIELDS OF INQUIRY

The study investigates the patterns of self citation in relation to the use of citation to others. Data collected on the referencing patterns of authors in four disciplines, two each from the physical sciences and the social sciences, were used to examine overall patterns of citation, in particular the number and age of references and the patterns of self citation. Included in the analysis were the proportion of self citing references to all references and exposure allocated to self citations within text compared with exposure given to other authors.
