This work presents an easy and practical method to optimize the size of an alternating piston pump connected to high solidity Ameri -can windmill. The analysis takes into account the variability of wind speed, design tip-speed ratio of the rotor and pulsation of the load. A single parameter known as reduced starting wind speed can optimise the whole system. The theoretical analysis is transformed into a graphical method from which anyone without the ma thematical background can utilize this work. Furthermore, once are known the variables: total head, mean wind speed, rotor radius, trans mission ratio and Weibull shape factor, it is possible to determine the optimum stroke volume of the pump directly by a single expression.
