One of the essential characters of paddy fields is the small dimension of plots. Moreover, there are levees with certain height of about 35-50 cm between plots (1) and some criss-cross irrigation ditches within the fields. Therefore, the performance of crossing over the levees or ditches would be the first problem to be considered during the paddy field tractor design. Secondly, the travel resistance of the tractors working on the paddy fields is 2-3 times as high as on the dry land (2). Consequently, lightening weight to reduce resistance would be another important problem to be solved during the paddy field tractor design. The travel resistance of paddy field tractor is very high, so the steering force is extremely great. Some materials indicated that the driver operating the hand tractor in the paddy fields all the day would be tired out. Therefore, for reducing labour intensity and raising labour productivity, it is necessary to reduce the steering force. The others, such as safety, reliability and convenience of maintenance also need to be guaranteed. This small versatile chassis designed for paddy fields takes major aim at dragging transplanters, seeding machines, cultivators, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, trailers and other tools.
