Prediction of Turbulent Flows around Bluff Bodies

A finite volume numerical calculation method for the solution of threedimensional incompressible steady Navier-Stokes equations in a general curvilinear coordinate system is presented. This method is applied to the calculation of turbulent flows around two bluff bodies; one is a surface-mounted cube with its orientation of 90 and 45 degrees, and the other is a bell-shaped hill. The results are compared with experimental data. General features of the flow around those bluff bodies are adequately predicted, and the complicated three-dimensional flow pattern has been clearly demonstrated with the aid of computational flow visualization.
