The low voltage tracking behaviour of polymeric materials has long been of interest to electrical engineers and material scientists. With the introduction over recent years of many new types of engineering polymers, it is clearly desirable from the engineering view point to be able to assess rapidly the likely tracking performance of such materials. For the material scientists, a method of predicting the electrical behaviour from the chemical structure of a real or hypothetical polymer would enable new materials to be tailor made, at least in the laboratory.
