USER NEEDS FOR ISDN AS SEEN BY THE BANKING COMMUNITY

While lending remains a primary function of banks, a variety of new, computer-based twoducts and services are assuming ever increasing importance. The convergence of computer and tele- communications technology is bringing telecommunications to the forefront as a key bank activity. Considering these factors ISDN appears to be the way of the future for banking telecommunications.In the development of ISDN we must look beyond pure communications needs if ISDN is to meet the needs of the banking community. It must provide for user identification, transaction security and privacy, and facilitate the development of standard financial transaction formats, like the MICR encoding on checks. By taking such considerations into mind in developing the communica-tions network, ISDN can greatly facilitate the eventual evolution of electronic funds transfer on a global basis.
