The matter of mountainn motorization is more discussed in Italy than in other countries. This matter, in fact, can't be completely settled by the use of the helicopter because of the weather-conditioning, particularly in the mountain, This involves that, at present, little payloads handling (up to 200 Kg) is still carried out, on tracks over a given height, by mules. It is common knowledge that mule is capable of exceptional performances and has become a traditional symbol of Italian Alpine Units, However, it's a long time since there has been the tendency to replace it by a mechanical means especially because of the not easy problems arising from its maintenance and behaviour. In the 50's, 200 units of 3×3 vehicle with variable track, of the type conceived by GARBARI (payload 750 Kg - picture 1) were tested. Such vehicle was no more produced essentially because it was far more mechanically sophisticated and far more complicated to drive. At present, use trials with 30 "little motor tracks 4×4" (picture 2) are being carried out. At the same time, experimental tests are being carried out on a tracked vehicle, called CA3, equipped with vertical location device of tracks (pictures 3 and 4).
