It is a well-known fact, that the wheel brakes of a cross country vehicle often are affected by intruding mud and dirt resulting in malfunction and rapid wear. Many attempts have been made to protect the brakes in this respect. So far most designs have been very little successful and sometimes made the situation worse by trapping the contaminations into the brake-drum. Designs exist comprising of a fully enclosed brake-drum containing the brake-shoe carrier and the wheel-cylinder. The brake fluid has to be fed into drillings in the wheel-spindle, which is complicated and expensive. No commercial available brakes can be utilized.
